Man Attempted to Explode SUV at the Pentagon, Officials Say

Officials say a man attempted to blow up a vehicle at the Pentagon on Monday morning.

An officer patrolling the Pentagon's north parking lot says that he saw the man, identified as Matthew Dmitri Richardson "striking a cigarette lighter to a piece of fabric that was inserted into the vehicle's gas tank," according to court documents.

The vehicle, a Land Rover SUV, reportedly belonged to an active-duty service member. The documents add that Richardson intended to blow up the vehicle and himself. He fled to nearby Arlington National Cemetery where he was caught.
