Voters in Denver made history on Wednesday, choosing to decriminalize psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms for a first in the US.
It was thought there was no chance Initiative 301 would pass, but the final vote tally released showed 50.56% of voters in favor of decriminalization.
The measure does not legalize psilocybin or allow for the sale of it in Denver. Campaign organizers in favor of passing the measure say their goal was to keep people out of jail for using or possessing mushrooms.
Recent clinical studies have revealed impressive results in using psilocybin to treat anxiety, depression, PTSD and other conditions. The FDA is currently running trials using the chemical for patients of treatment-resistant depression.
The federal government and DEA classify psilocybin-containing mushrooms as a Schedule I drug with "no currently accepted medical use." Some believe the vote in Denver could set in motion a widespread acceptance of magic mushrooms the same way they paved the path for marijuana.
