On the heels of his arrest, Aaron Hernandez has now also been dropped by the New England Patriots, which brings up interesting questions about his signing bonus.
The salary cap for him and the overall cap for the team include some involved figures, which you can read about in detail here. However, the condensed version is that of Aaron Hernandez's $12.5 million signing bonus, around $10 million of it was already paid out.
You can be assured the Patriots will be trying to get back the money they already paid him, but interestingly enough, the fact that they released him might make that harder than had they kept him on board.
The reason is tied to Hernandez's contract, which includes a clause about having to give back the bonus money if he commits a forfeitable breach of contract. One way to breach the contract would be to end up in prison. Because the Patriots released Hernandez before a conviction of a crime, they might find it harder to get that bonus money back.
