You may have heard of chicken and waffles, but when have chicken and doughnuts ever gotten their due? Thanks to Jeff Halpern (yes, THAT Jeff Halpern, the same Jeff Halpern who's played for the Capitols), and his childhood buddy, we can now indulge.
As kids, Jeff was rewarded with donuts when he played a good game of youth hockey. From those inauspicious roots grew Astro Doughnuts and Fried Chicken at 1308 G. St. NW, Washington, DC, 20005.
So what kind of fried chicken can you expect? There's Grandma's buttermilk recipe. Perhaps you'd prefer a kick in the mouth with Sriracha-coated. Maybe the double-fried Korean style tempts your tastebuds. And then there are the doughnuts, which change up every day, with about 30 total flavors. Here are some of the doughnuts you can expect:
(Black and White and Giadiula)
(Maple bacon & Brooklyn Blackout)
(Creamsicle and Saigon Cinnamon)
