You know how it sometimes seems as though no good deed goes unpunished? This is one of those times.
A few days ago, Dave Thomas from San Bernandino, CA went to get his dog, Buzz Lightyear, from the shelter where he'd been impounded when Dave was in the clink for a few days for traffic violations. When Dave came to get Buzz, he found out it would be $400, which he couldn't afford.
Enter Maria Sanchez, the animal lover and photographer who snapped the photo of Dave sitting in front of Buzz's cage, crying, and stroking the dog's paw. She posted the photo on Facebook and raised $2,000 toward Dave's plight.
Maria next went to the herculean effort of trackign Dave down, who'd left no contact information with the shelter. Once she connected with him, Dave was happily reunited with Buzz.
You'd hope the story ended with that nice warm fuzzy, but no. Once Buzz and Dave were together, Maria offered to pay Dave's tickets, bills, and rent with the rest of the $1,600 that had been donated, but he refused, and wanted her to just hand over the cash. She said no because she wanted the people who donated the money to know it was going to a good cause (there was a not so veiled reference in this exhange that Dave might have a drug problem).
Dave went to the same TV stations that helped Maria track him down to complain that she didn't give him the rest of the money. Now, he's threatening to sue Maria over the rest of the money. Maria has steadfastly stood by her promise to pay Dave's bills, but she doesn't want to just hand over the cash. Her final word was if Dave refuses the offer, then she'll give those who donated the option to get their money back, or to donate it to an animal shelter.
