Jeopardy! host, Alex Trebek, penalized a contestant in last night’s show for mispronouncing his answer. The question was essentially, “What is the name of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s character on ‘Seinfeld'.” Fidelito Cortes was the first to answer and said, “Elaine,” which is correct. However, Trebek immediately said the answer was wrong and moved to the next contestant who answered, “Benes.” Trebek said this contestant was correct. Trebek then corrected Cortes on his pronunciation of “Elaine” and explained that is why his answer was wrong. Cortes was clearly correct, and should not have been penalized for having a regional accent. In the end, his accent didn’t matter. He was the day's champion.
