If you're a reader of this blog, you know that I'm weird. Well...duh.
The other thing you might know about me if you read this blog is that I received my master's degree in higher education student affairs in summer 2011 from The George Mason University. When I'm not rocking out on the DC101, I can be found working on a couple different college campuses either as an academic advisor or an instructor. Yeah I know right...they let my dumbass get in front of a classroom and teach the youths. Yup...they did!
For those of you who were members of the Class of 2012 from high school and will soon be heading off to college, here are a few things that you must know to be successful while away at your college/university you'll be attending.
Now...for those of you who attended an orientation over the summer and actually paid attention, you should have already heard the following. If not...write this down!
Serious Tips from Professor Khan
-
- Go see your academic advisor. Especially if you want to graduate on time or eventually get a letter of recommendation for graduate school.
- Read your textbooks. And because you read the material once doesn't mean you understand it.
- It is possible to balance your schoolwork and your fun time and still have a good time in college!
- Get into a habit of studying every evening and finding a good place to study
- Seek out your instructors and speak with them after class or during office hours.
- If your college or university offers a freshman orientation class, take it. It will be very beneficial in your development during your tenure at your school
- There are tons of resources available on a college campus to assist you in your progression as a student. Seek them out!!!
- FERPA is a thing you should know everything about. College student records are private and have been since 1974. Your university catalog should have all the information you need to know about FERPA. Inform yourself about this
- Go see your academic advisor. Especially if you want to graduate on time or eventually get a letter of recommendation for graduate school.
Tips from Khan when he was an undergraduate student...
-
- Leave your letter jacket at home
- You went to beach week...no one cares. Only wear that t-shirt to sleep or to the gym or around the dorm. Not in public
- Wearing sweats to class is acceptable. Wearing your jammies to class is not!!!
- Get in a habit of working out from the instant you get to campus. You will most probably gain weight! All those post midnight meals will add up.
- Try not to party during the week and go to class. Instructors can pick out the hungover kids and will call them out!
- Don't be the jerk that brings their computer to class and just looks at Facebook the entire time!
- Don't text from your smartphone, tablet or any other mobile device! Your professor will notice! How you ask...no one looks down and smiles that much at their crotch!
